How to Plan a Perfect Family Picnic

I always liked the idea of picnics. I would watch all of those movies where the family would pack a wicker basket and a checkerboard blanket and dream about being there. You have to admit that there’s something undeniably charming about a family picnic. Well, my waiting is over, I have decided we will be the family that picnics while enjoying delicious food and the great outdoors. These will be the memories that will stay with my little ones forever. We will indulge in delicious food, spend quality time together, and create wonderful memories. Since my only experience in picnics is over the TV, I have researched how to plan the perfect family picnic. Here’s a guide to help you organize a fantastic day out that everyone will enjoy.

Choosing the Location

The first step in planning a picnic is choosing the right location. Consider these options:

Local Park: A nearby park is convenient and usually has amenities like restrooms and playgrounds. The truth is that I am always happier when there is a proper toilet nearby. I always panic when I don’t know where the closest one is. Kids will also appreciate having a playground near that will allow them to run off all of that extra energy.

Beach: If you’re near the beach, a beach picnic can be a delightful option. The sound of waves and the opportunity for a quick swim are bonuses. For me, the sea in the Netherlands is too cold for swimming but we have a lake close by so I am thinking of having our first picnic experience there as.

Nature Reserve: For a more scenic experience, choose a nature reserve with beautiful trails and picnic spots. You can make a whole day out of it and show kids beautiful nature.

Backyard: Sometimes the best picnics are the ones right at home. Your backyard can be transformed into a picnic paradise with minimal effort and it can be a great option for a test drive.

Packing the Perfect Picnic Basket

A well-packed picnic basket is key to a successful outing. Here’s what experts suggest you should include:

Food: Finger foods are ideal for picnics as they are relatively mess-free and don’t demand a lot of extra equipment. Think sandwiches, wraps, cheese and crackers, fruits, and veggies with dip. Don’t forget some sweet treats like cookies or brownies. Dessert always makes everything better.

Drinks: Bring plenty of water, and some refreshing drinks like lemonade or iced tea, especially on a hot day. If it is not that warm you can pack a thermos with hot chocolate for kids, or for you. You can also bring coffee in the thermos.

Utensils and Extras: Don’t forget essentials like plates, cups, napkins, and cutlery. Unless you cut everything at home, you will also need to pack a cutting board and knife for fruits and cheese. Wet wipes and hand sanitizer are also handy, especially for the little ones.

Blanket: Choose a large and comfortable blanket. If you can, bring a waterproof one as grass can often be damp.

Cooler: Cooler with ice packs will keep everything fresh and drinks cold during the warmer weather, especially if your picnic includes perishable items.

Entertainment

While food is the star of the picnic, having some entertainment can enhance the experience:

Games: Bring along some outdoor games like frisbee, soccer, or a kite. A deck of cards or a board game can be fun too.

Books: A good book or a few magazines can be relaxing for adults and kids alike. And while the kids are playing you can relax with a book and have a quiet time for yourself.

Music: A portable speaker can add a lovely ambiance to your picnic. Create a playlist with your family’s favorite tunes. Just be mindful of other people and don’t play music too loud.

Tips for a Smooth Picnic

Here are a few extra tips that will ensure your picnic goes off without a hitch:

Check the Weather: Always, and I mean always, check the weather forecast before heading out. Especially if you live in the Netherlands where there can be four seasons changing in one day. It’s no fun getting caught in the rain without a backup plan.

Food Safety: Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot. Use insulated containers and avoid leaving food out for too long. You don’t want to ruin the whole experience with something that can be easily prevented.

Bug Protection: Bring insect repellent to keep pesky bugs at bay. A citronella candle can also help. Mosquitos can be so annoying and try to crash your picnic, but good insect repellent can keep them away.

Comfort: Bring along some cushions or folding chairs if you prefer not to sit on the ground. Don’t forget sunblock and hats for protection.

Making It Special

To make your picnic extra special, consider these touches:

Themed Picnics: Create a theme for your picnic, like “Italian Feast” with pasta salad and antipasto, or “Teddy Bear Picnic” for the little ones with teddy bear-shaped sandwiches.

Decorations: A small bouquet of flowers or some fairy lights can add a charming touch to your picnic setup. Some well-placed cushions can be a decoration while helping you stay comfortable.

Capture the Moment: Don’t forget to take some photos. Picnics are perfect for candid family shots and scenic landscapes. It can be hard to get a family photo with everyone in it, so use any special occasion you can. Prop the phone against the picnic basket, set it on a timer and have some fun. You can also set it up to be activated with a hand gesture so you know when the picture is being taken. I like the idea of a timer more because I feel that will make pictures more spontaneous.

A well-planned picnic is a delightful way to spend quality time with your family, enjoying nature and delicious food. So grab your basket, gather your loved ones, and head out for a perfect picnic day!
